Making Knitwear: Beyond Basics

  • The Stitchery 24 Sandyford Place Glasgow, G3 7NG United Kingdom (map)

2 Day Weekend Workshop (+ 1 prep evening) // Level: Beyond Basics // Cost: £130 (includes pattern) // Instructor: Susie Haigh // Patterns: Moneta, Wren, or Appleton

Up your sewing game, broaden your options, and make yourself a comfortable, well fitting knitwear dress in a fabric and style that suits you.

If you have a basic understanding of sewing with knits - for example, having taken our Knitwear for Beginners course - and are looking to take on more complex projects, achieve more professional results, or simply reinforce your skill-set, then this workshop has been designed for you.

Choose your project from a range of 3 lovely knitwear patterns: The Moneta or Wren dress from Colette or the Appleton wrap around dress from Cashmerette. Make your garment in your own chosen fabric; make it fit your own unique body; and make it with styling options that reflect your personality. All 3 pattern options come with a larger range of sizes than most commercial patterns, making them ideal for curvier body types too.

Your instructor for this workshop is our very own Susie Haigh. Her curriculum for the weekend will include a reminder of some knitwear basics, plus a number of more advanced techniques, such as:

  • Full bust adjustments with knit fabrics
  • Stabalising seams using elastic
  • Hemming with a twin needle
  • Overlocker & coverlocker machines for knit fabrics
  • Using trickier fabrics, such as lightweight jersey
  • Gathered necklines (Moneta)
  • Lining a sleeveless bodice (Wren)
  • In-seam pockets (Wren)
  • Shirring with clear elastic (Wren & Moneta)
  • Making a v-neck band (Appleton)
  • Wrap ties (Appleton)

Prep Session

There will be a prep session for this workshop on the evening of the 7th August, 5-7pm. As always, this will be a chance for students to pick up their pattern, take measurements and select the right size. Susie will be going over the basics of tracing off your pattern, some basic adjustments and choosing appropriate fabrics. Time permitting, students may start to trace their patterns, finishing this up at home before the weekend workshop begins.

The prep session is highly recommended. But if you're unable to make it for some reason, and still keen to take the course, please get in touch to discuss alternatives.
