Screen print your own fabric,
then sew something out of it!
Normally we would ask students to turn up to our classes with their purchased length of fabric. But for this 6 week course, we've teamed up with Glasgow based Textile Designers Bespoke Atelier to offer something truly unique and wholesomely creative: the opportunity to print your very own, unique design of fabric before you even start sewing with it.
Students will spend their first 3 weeks at Bespoke's lovely studio in The Glue Factory. From the initial steps of finding inspiration and designing a print, to the final pull of the squeegee, Yvonne and Marion will be guiding you through the beautiful process of screen-printing by hand.
The latter 3 weeks will be spent at The Stitchery, where Susie Haigh will be giving you a hands-on tutorial on the basics of sewing, practising foundational techniques on cheap fabrics before going on to sew one or two wonderful items out of your very own screen-print. A selection of mini projects will be available for this section, including tote bags, cushion covers, aprons and zip purses (makeup bags or washbags).
This course is open to complete beginners and experienced sewers alike. If you're confident on a sewing machine, you are free to skip the sewing tutorials and get on with the making. Similarly those with the confidence to do so may propose an alternative project from the ones mentioned; for example a simple piece of clothing.
Outcomes
- A basic set of screen printing skills
- A basic set of sewing skills
- At least one item that you've made from your screen printed fabric.
- A digital copy of the Stitchery Sewing for Beginners e-book, for future reference and to help you to develop your sewing skills further.
